I choose to fit in

Most of my life I have felt like I don’t fit in. When I lived in Canada, I was the black girl among a sea of other people groups. And now I am in the Caribbean, and although I am now in the color majority, my Canadian accent separates me. After thirty-eight years, I have now learned that people will do anything to make other people feel like they don’t fit in.
Will I be a member of the herd . . .

It is very much a part of human nature to isolate others to gain one’s own acceptance. So now I choose to fit in anywhere I go, why, just because I want to. That doesn’t mean that I have to be chatting it up with the group, but what it does mean is that I am comfortable even when I am not in the midst or included in the group.
or the Lone Ranger.

I choose not to be angry or resentful when I am not included. So if you talk to me, that’s great, and if you don’t want to talk to me, that’s great too, maybe you will want to talk to me tomorrow and I’ll be happy to talk to you then.

I’ve learned that fitting in is really about confidence. Do you feel sure of yourself even though I am treating you this or that way? What I am alluding to is that it doesn’t matter how you treat me, I will be content, comfortable and confident regardless of external circumstances.
I choose to be the only one among the group.

So do I fit in? Yes, I fit in any and everywhere I go regardless of the social climate, the people I am with, or who I am! I make myself fit in.

I choose to fit in!
